About the Artist "Jamie Okuma"

As early as Jamie Okuma can remember her life has been in the art world in one way or another. Her mother Sandra was a graphic artist and worked at MCA records when Jamie was a child. During her time there she produced album covers for Lynard Skynyrd and Cher to name a few. After high school Okuma took a few graphic design classes at Palomar College in San Marcos, CA before attending the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, NM. From the age of 18 she has been a professional artist completely devoted to her art. She has exhibited her work at the Heard Indian market in Phoenix, Az and at the Santa Fe Indian Art Market in Santa Fe, NM. She has garnered a total of five Best in Show Awards. Two from the Heard, and three from the Santa Fe Indian Market. One of only two artists to achieve this distinction. Okuma has work in the permanent collections of The Minneapolis Institute of Art, The Nelson-Atkins Museum and the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian.

About the Art:

“I chose to create a stylized floral design that is a staple element in the Plateau / Great Basin design aesthetic. The colours I chose are also common in this style of bead-work and has become a signature colour combination in my work.” - Jamie Okuma

Beauty and Function all Rolled into One

I live in the Northwest Territories and I find these mukluks to be warm for walking around town and to be easy to slip on and off without needing to fasten any ties. I Love that they have a rubber sole and so there is no need to use rubbers over them to protect the mukluks, as this is a built in feature. I have the Okuma Gatherer Mukluks and I have received countless comments on how beautiful and unique they are.

At Manitobah, we use high-quality materials and talented artisans to create the best mukluks and moccasins in the world. It takes a lot of time and effort to produce Manitobah footwear and we take great pride in the comfort, function and beauty we create. We also take pride in being Canadian, which is why we continue to produce some collections at our Indigenous-owned production facility in Winnipeg, Canada.
