About the Artist: Louisa Moreau (nee Tsetso) is a Dene artisan from the Dehcho Region of the Northwest Territories (NT). She was born and raised at Taggacho (2 Islands), 45 miles downstream from Fort Simpson, NT; she currently lives in Fort Simpson. Louisa started to learn to sew at 12 years old, from her mother and in her 40s, she learned how to tan moose-hide from her mother and oldest sister. Daily, she beads, sews traditional garments, and creates moose-hair tufting or works to tan hides (moose, caribou, deer or elk) depending on the season and supply. She is inspired by nature when she gathers medicines, picks berries and tea-leaves, gathers wood for tanning hides, or goes fishing and designs exquisite floral patterns. She enjoys sharing her skills with the people eager to learn and teaches in the local schools and sewing group. Her creativity and traditional knowledge allow her to make beautiful moccasins, gloves, mitts, hats, jackets, vests, mukluks, wrap-arounds and cases to save guard tools or personal items. She has collaborated with her family to recreate a turn of the 20th century piece which is part of The Canadian Museum of Civilization’s collection and other commissioned pieces. Louisa’s personal work is showcased by the Government of the Northwest Territories’ airport displays, and at local arts festivals and bazaars.
