Merie’s Story: I am a 19 year old Anishnabekwe, Algonquin First Nations from
Maniwaki, Quebec. I was born and raised in my hometown called Rapid Lake. But I originally moved to better my education and to succeed outside of my hometown. As a little girl, I watched my grandparents make cradleboards together, my grandmother made earrings, sewed moccasins, jingle dresses and clothing for our baby dolls and many more! Then my mother started at a young age and today, she makes jingle dresses for my sisters, regalia for my brother, she sews moccasins and mukluks, and also beads earrings. My mother's earrings and mukluks are the best selling ones today. When my mother would pick up a project, I would sit there and watch her until she was done. I wanted to be just as talented as her because she would not quit on something she started. She's always been so motivated. Finally picked up a needle at 12 years old, I didnt have the patience back then but everyday I tried until I finished at least a pair of earrings. I made my first pair at 12 years old and when I finished it, that's when my addiction started, I knew I was going to bead my whole life and I finally have a hobby that I love and enjoy. I've been so inspired by both grandmother and mother. I thank them everyday because now I sell my projects across Canada and in the states. They couldn't be any more proud of me and I couldn't be any more proud of myself!
