Karen's Story: Karen MacAulay is second generation Cree who was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba who feels artistry was always in her blood. Her mother grew up in Norway House and always did her best to seek out her culture to learn and teach Karen as much as she could. In 2010, Karen began to work in northern communities in Manitoba. There, she met elders who invited her to bead with them. That was the start of her learning how to bead. Karen is now a passionate artisan of creations of Indigenous footwear, mitts, gauntlets and jewellery. Her goal is to incorporate traditional and contemporary Cree floral design as much as she can and to celebrate her mother and grandmother’s culture. Karen is in the process of starting a small business named Kree Mayd Leatherworks & More where she can display cultural teachings, artistry and traditional footwear, as well as mitts and gauntlets.
