Cynthia's Story: Cynthia is a Cree woman with Scottish ancestry, born and raised on West Island in Norway House, Manitoba and now lives in St Andrews, Manitoba with her husband. She learned the craft of moccasin making through Donna Bear Glover, Niwahkomakanak (My Relations) Inc. in 2016 and since worked with Storyboot Artist and friend, Phyllis Queskekapow. Both Donna and Phyllis inspired her to continue. Beading is her self taught skill that she expands on with her artistic ability and background.
Fishing, hunting, trapping and living off the land was a way of life in Cynthia’s upbringing. Her father was a commercial fisherman and her mother was a talented crafter with sewing, knitting and crocheting. She has very fond memories of sewing with her mother. Cynthia has a passion for crafting moccasins and respects the materials she uses comes from Mother Earth and the moccasins she makes gives her a strong sense of cultural pride. She will be furthering her crafting skills in learning to make mukluks and gauntlets in the near future.
In her spare time she enjoys painting, drawing, gardening, travelling with her husband, spending time with family and making moccasins. Cynthia feels very blessed and grateful to have learned to art of native crafting.
