Amber's story: Amber was born and raised in Baawaating (Sault Ste. Marie, ON). She is of Ojibway and Cree descent and takes pride in her culture. She began expressing her Indigenous identity and pride through the arts. Her interest in art began as a child. Growing up she had much exposure to nature, artistic family members, local artists, and elders. Her artistry includes painting, pyrography, and porcupine quilling. Porcupine quilling has been her recent focal point. She gives recognition to her partner, Jordan's, grandparents, Leonard Kimewon, who now is watching us from the spirit world, and his wife master quiller Elizabeth Kimewon who resides in a retirement home on Wikemikong First Nation. Also a special mention to cousin Mabel Lewis-Hill for pointers on the quilling journey. The introduction and teachings on the art of porcupine quilling is an honoured gift. Amber is one of few in her region mastering this traditional art. She is meticulous in her work and enjoys creating and designing.
Quills come from an animal that has its own spirit, therefore, quills have a spirit too. The earrings are one on a kind. Most of the materials she uses are all from our Mother Earth. (birch bark, sweetgrass)
In closing, Amber is very passionate about the arts, traditions, and language revitalization. She is an Early Childhood Educator and teaches Anishinaabemowin and arts to the children.
Amber will continue to create, design and share her art as it is a part of her. Through creative art, traditions and sharing Amber will continue to honour her heritage. Miigwech!”
