WHAT YOU WILL DO

The Controller is a proven team leader with technical accounting proficiency, effective tactical management skills, and basic strategic enterprise awareness. The incumbent will be responsible for responsible for overseeing all financial and accounting activities within the organization.

The Controller is responsible for managing the company’s financial operations, including the production of periodic financial reports, maintenance of an adequate system of accounting records, and a comprehensive set of controls designed to mitigate risk. This position involves enhancing the accuracy of the company's reported financial results, ensuring compliance with financial reporting standards, and ensuring that reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) or international financial reporting standards (IFRS).

LOCATION

You will be working from our head office, located at the Forks in Winnipeg, Manitoba. This position is a hybrid/remote work model.

KEY RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to: Chief Finance Officer

Key Relationships: Finance team, external finance institution partners

Direct Reports: Manager of Finance, Accountants, and Coordinators

KEY RESPONSIBILTIES

  • Oversee and execute day-to-day financial operations, including reporting, accounting operations, budgeting and forecasting, and internal controls and compliance.
  • Manage the accounting department and ensure that the accounting functions operate efficiently.
  • Oversee the daily operations of the accounting department, including accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and general ledger.
  • Coordinate the preparation of the annual budget and financial forecasts.
  • Analyze variances between actual and budgeted figures and report significant issues to management.
  • Provide financial analysis and decision-making support for various company projects and initiatives.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams and external finance related vendors, providing financial insights to support decision-making and contribute to strategic planning.
  • Develop and maintain a system of internal controls to safeguard the company’s assets and ensure the integrity of financial records.
  • Ensure compliance with local municipal, state/provincial, and federal government reporting requirements and tax filings.
  • Serve as the primary contact for external auditors and coordinate audit activities.
  • Liaise with banks, investors, and other financial stakeholders to ensure positive relations are maintained.

IDEAL EXPERIENCE

Professional Experience:

  • Minimum 5-7 years of direct, progressive experience working in a finance accounting or controller role is required
  • Minimum 3 years of management experience is required
  • Experience with ERP systems and QuickBooks software is preferred
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey financial information effectively to a diverse range of audiences
  • Experience working in an Indigenous or culturally sensitive environment is an asset

Educational Position Requirements:

  • Post-secondary degree in Finance, Accounting, or Business is required
  • CPA, CGA, or another professional designation is required
